Go either to the Gun Runners store or to the elevator in the Lucky 38. There's a companion dismissal terminal in each of these locations that will place them back where they originally were before you "hired" them. You can then go back and invite them to join your party again. Thanks!
Here is an internal number for the companion - for Veronica this seems to be 000e32a9 - you can get the ID's of others from the Wikia site as well. This will move the companion to your location: prid moveto player This will move you to the companions current location: player.moveto Those are the only 3 I use, the rest seem to die to easy, or rush into melee fights. Make sure to give them stimpacks..and heal them between fights. Maybe dead is not dead in this game, but in Fallout 3, my companions lasted like 5 minutes sometimes.
